as an la-born pianist based in nyc, i make music intended to grow community and pay respect to my lineages

that of my family ancestry

that of the improvised music of the korean peninsula

and that of the black american masters of music that are my lifelong main influences on the piano

my formal education in music was at new england conservatory, where i studied piano with jason moran, bruce brubaker, frank carlberg, and ethan iverson; and improvisation with nasheet waits, billy hart, joe morris, and doyeon kim

my playing has been heard with david binney, JSQ!, fugitive, joe morris, doyeon kim, michael formanek, and in collaboration with rashid johnson

i sometimes write poems, which are very much intertwined with my musical practice and usually explore relationships and/or my positionality as a grandchild of immigrants in the usa

i also write album reviews and editorials on musical artists of the korean diaspora for koreanindie.com
